Beauty Tips for Newbies — the inside scoop

This makeup game is overwhelming, isn’t it girls? If you’re a newbie, what do you do, when, and how? In Asia there are some great makeup tips that involve routines and healthy ingredients. We have spoken about ingredients before (see link) and can’t stress more about how what you put on your skin is so important.

Snails & Pearls believe in that we are all beautiful and we think that beauty products shouldn’t cover us up, but bring out our healthiest looking selves. These beauty tips should help a girl look her most beautiful self.

Newbie Tip: A good slap

Applying moisturiser with a nice love tap into the skin can help stimulate circulation, raise energy levels, and helps skincare products penetrate the skin. When putting the cream on your face, first rub it with your fingers and smooth it into place and then gently tap your skin.

Newbie Tip: Use SPF

Ladies, SPF is your first umbrella against the sun! It’s hot out there, especially in some parts of Asia. What do we do? Well yeah, we wear long sleeves, hats, scarves. We cover up! But, don’t forget to protect your skin whether the sun is out or not, shield your skin from harmful rays. Every day.

Newbie Tip: Mask

We love masks for moisturizing to nourish our skin, moisturize it, and revive it. This is a simple tip, a once weekly activity that can help make you look beautiful and feel relaxed at the same time. Steam up your face first to open your pores. We like sheet masks so we can leave them on longer. Afterwards, leave the gel /serum on the skin to make sure you’re getting all the benefits of the mask.

Newbie Tip: Use oil

Oils, especially plant-based oils, can lift dirt, makeup, sunscreen, off the skin effectively while also moisturising. And, counter to what you might think, oils don’t clog pores. Again, we open our pores with a warm cloth, massage oil into our skin, and then let it sit for 30 seconds to a minute, and then gently wipe the oil away. Voila!

Oily Acne Prone Skin? Routine can help!

What do I do if my skin is oily, acne prone, AND dry at the same time?

oily acne

Hi posse (do you mind if I call you that? ahahaha). It’s been a long weekend. Well, actually, it’s Tuesday. I say long weekend because I had an acne breakout. WTF! I’m an adult, why am I getting acne?

Well…it seems as if I was born this way (whattup Gaga 🙂 ). Science says that acne is genetic. So, like, thanks mom and dad for this breakout. I thought my oily skin was because of a big chocolate binge I had this weekend. Nope. Okay, confession, I also ate some greasy McDonald’s fries. But it turns out that neither of them causes my oily acne skin. It’s purely a matter of my genes.

But, here’s the cool thing. I learned that even though my acne breakouts are out of my control, I can make them look less severe by having a routine. Bible as Kim would say. Here is my routine:

Cleansing: I do this morning and night and use a gel based cleanser. Seems as if lots of brands want to talk to me about cleansing because they label their products for “oily” skin. Yeah, for us acne folk. Yay! My favorite products are: De First Cosmetics Works and Living Nature Purifying cleanser. You can use anything you like, but make sure you cleanse day and night!

Tone, Tone, Tone (memba them?)

acne oil skin

Ok, maybe not. Toning is super important after cleansing. It helps pick up “dirt” you may have missed. Tone on your T zone, around your nose, your chin. I like Medicox. It sounds all official, like a doctor would give it to you.

Moisture up

Every day! The moisture won’t contribute to your acne or oily skin. It will help your skin regenerate, not dry out, feel good. These should be water based. Just like when you’re thirsty, you drink…H2O yo! Lotions work better for oily skin than creams. Our favorite? Tonymoly Green Tea Watery Lotion. You know that we are a fan of natural, Asian inspired ingredients, such as green tea!

Snail Creams: 5 to get your slime on!

Snails crawls on the face of a woman for the demonstration of a new beauty treatment at the beauty salon "Ci:z.Labo" in Tokyo on July 13, 2013 as the salon will start the new service from July 15. "Slime from snails helps remove old cells, heal the skin after sun burn and moisturise it," said Manami Takamura, a beauty salon employee, as she placed three gastropods on a woman's face. Here it is. Snails (no pearls here, sorry). Try not to think about the slip, the slide, the slow moving trail leaving critters that you see crawling all around your yard right after a heavy rain storm. Just think about how beautiful you’ll feel knowing that your skin is being taken care of with these 5 must have snail creams.

How did we get to the point where pointing snail slime on our skin, and paying for it, became a thang? Well, blame Dr. Hippocrates (Greek guy, way back when, used to crush snails and mix them with sour goats milk, and yeah, rub it all over the skin of his patients who were swollen. Or so the internets say.). Or blame Chilean snail farmers whose hands should have been rough (they’re farmers for effs sake) but noticed that their skin was silkier than their wives’ paws. No, really.

Why does snail slime work? Simply put, snails excrete mucin and mucin has: hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein enzymes, antimicrobial and copper peptides, and proteoglycans. Man, that’s a lot of big words. They work wonders on skin. More technically (like you care, you just want to buy this stuff!!!), lab studies have suggested that snail slime stimulates the production of elastin and collagen, increases a glycoprotein production, and stimulates a type of cell that helps with cell healing.

Sooooo, it seems like snail slime kind of works. What do you think? We at Snails and Pearls obviously agree 🙂 and are all in.

Try these out for yourself and let us know on Facebook what you think.

Kylie launches eyeshadow shades

kylie bomber jacket

Yesterday Kylie Jenner launched her first non-lipstick product, Kyshadow (see what she did there?) And the Internet freaked out! The kit has nine shades of eye shadow in a bronze palette. It’s already sold out. The Internets are freaking out.

Kylie took to Instagram to show off Kyshadow and has apparently been wearing the shades for the past 6 months. Who knew? Colors include catchy names like Jasper, Tiger Eye (not Tyga?) and Goldstone.

Kyshadow follows Kylie’s already crazy successful line of matte lip kits. Kylie has supposedly trademarked the phrases Kyliner and Kybrow. She’s looking to cover your whole face in beautiful product. But true to form the haters are hating and saying that Kylie stole this palette from Shaaanxo. I don’t buy that argument. Kylie’s team is vast, she has the cash to do whatever she wants, she doesn’t have to steal. Except when it comes to Coachella, hahahahahaha:

Imitation is the highest form of flattery right? And it’s usually the other way around. WE want to be like HER. From the cray trend of sucking on shot glasses to get her lips, also known as the #kyliejennerchallenge fails to Cosmo assistant fashion beauty editor who tried to live like Kylie for a week (wha? expensive :0):

Looks like fun, no? Kylie has it going on. We are jealous, envious, impressed. The more product she releases and the more fashion styles she rocks and recos the closer we get to the Kyliverse! Kyliverse, I should trademark that before she does 🙂

For now, we have to wait for her eyeshadow. People, let’s collectively take a few breaths, wait a month, and  then run to Kylie’s cosmetics site, stat!

Want, want, want. Breath, breath, breath. WANT…sigh.

Smokey halo gets on your eye: How to make your eyes look rounder and POP as shown by Jaclyn Hill!

Start with moisturizing the skin with primer water

jh1

When the primer is dry apply foundation on your whole face and blend in with a brush

Apply concealer and blend it around your eyes with a wet beauty blender.

jh4

Set the concealer so it doesn’t crease and then set the whole face.

jhconcealer1

Apply “sherbet” powder in the entire crease area using a longhaired brush. Start in the lower crease and go from the outer corner to the inner corner of the eye. Blend for a minute!

Then use a warm brown shade (hot chocolate) and a smaller blending brush to place on the outer corner of the eye. Keep it low and below the crease.

jhhotchoco

Use a pencil brush to get to the inner corner of the eye with the same brown shade.

jhpencilbrush

Next use a soft shade (buttery) and apply to brow bone.

jhbttery

Use a wet brush and apply a light (pink champagne) powder to the entire center of the eye.

jhpinkchamp

Apply more of the warm brown (hot chocolate) to the edges to prevent a harsh look and blend the colors.

Lightly apply liner to lash line.

jhliner

Put on long lashes.

jhlashes

Re-use warm brown powder to line lower lash, all the way to the inner tear duct corner of the eye.

jhlowerlash

Use a pencil brush and blend out the lower lash line with a darker shade (metallic plum).

jhmetallicplum

Put a creamy eye liner on lower lash line.

jheyeliner

Extracts: 10 Asian Influenced Ingredients for Your Skin

Most of us are used to applying skin cream without thinking about its ingredients. But what is inside our creams? And are they good for us? It’s known that our skin absorbs what we put on it. In fact, the experts say that our skin absorbs up to 64% of contaminants found in drinking water! The porousness of our face is several times more permeable than our body. And other studies have shown our skin absorbing fragrance ingredients at 100%. With that in mind, it’s time to go au naturale. Here is a guide to some of the natural extracts that are part of Asia’s skin care product trends.
